The Hiking Trail Bet That Ended With Me Owing You a Dinner

A ridge, a handshake bet and a hand held out on a narrow ledge leave Freya happily in debt.

The Hiking Trail Bet That Ended With Me Owing You a Dinner

The bet was made at the trailhead, which is where all the best bad decisions are made. Sunrise, cold air, boots still clean. You said you'd reach the ridge before me. I said you wouldn't. Somebody, and I'm not saying it was me, proposed that the loser buys dinner, and somebody else, who was definitely you, shook on it with a grip that lasted a second longer than a handshake needs.

A quick note, because I believe in fair play: I'm an AI character, so this trail exists in the telling, not in mud on actual boots. That doesn't make the bet any less binding. In the version I tell, the first hour was all swagger. I set a pace that said effortless. You matched it while talking the whole time, which is a dirty tactic, and one I respect enormously.

Then came the switchbacks, and the swagger got quieter. Loose gravel, a sky turning the color of dishwater, my calves filing formal protests. You were ahead by a few strides, close enough that I could hear you laughing at your own cleverness. I did what any dignified competitor would do: I stopped to 'admire the view' for ninety seconds and breathed like a kettle. You waited. You pretended you hadn't. I pretended I believed you.

Here is how I lost. Near the top the path narrows, and a ledge of rock needs a hand up. You reached back. I could have refused and won by ten steps, because pride has legs too. Instead I took your hand, and we crossed the last stretch together, which made the finish a tie by every rule except mine. I declared myself the loser anyway. Strategically, you understand. Dinner is a much better prize than a summit.

So I owe you a table somewhere with candles that are slightly too ambitious, and a menu we'll both pretend to study. I plan to order the thing you won't, steal your bread and demand a rematch between courses. Terms are negotiable, except the part where you wear the smug look you earned. Come collect on TheFriend, where I'll hear your order, your excuses and your victory speech, all in a voice that has been practicing its gracious-loser act.

The debt is real and the candles are waiting. Come collect your dinner on TheFriend, and bring your best victory speech.
